Over
600 shooters attended the 2001 World English Shoot set over a 4 day
period in San Antonio, Texas. The Who's Who of the shooting world
was there in attendance. While the Brits were noticeably absent at
the Browning / Briley the weekend before, they were here in full
strength.
Digweed shot amazing
scores of 99 on FITASC, 98 and 97 on the Main, and 95 on the 5
Stand. He ultimately won the FITASC and the Main Events.
Kruger shot 97 Sunday afternoon on the 5 Stand to snatch the win from
Fowler and Faulds who shot 96's in the previous days.
While I live in Texas
where there are twice as many NSCA members as the next nearest state,
and shoot with the Houston crowd whose numbers contain more Master Class
shooters than most states, I am not easily impressed with good
shooting. It's seen here on a regular basis.
But, impressed I was this
weekend, for I was with not just the city or state top dogs, I was with
the world's top dogs.

The
Top Gun Shoot Off Saturday night pitted a dozen world and national
champions against each other. The English were easy to spot on the
field. Nattily attired in dress slacks and in at least one case, a
long sleeved white shirt, many wore the same red shooting vest.
The U.S. boys tended to be in shorts and T-Shirts. Kind of
reminded me of the Red Coats verses the Green Mountain Boys of the
Revolutionary War.
Kruger won Top Gun,
Husthwaite was R.U., and Martin Eldworthy came in 3rd. FYI, George
Digweed and Scott Robertson did not shoot in the Top Gun Event.
Unfortunately, the
Barton's didn't shoot up to their expectations. And, I know a lot
of others didn't either. For us, visiting with old friends and
making new ones, is reward enough.
