A PARADISE OUTSIDE OF HOUSTON
by Cindy Barton (7/10/05)

It was July 4th weekend, and we decided to take a break from Sporting Clays.  What should we do?  Let's take the boys fishing!

We visited the Rio Brazos Hunting Preserve in June 2005 when they had their first NSCA sporting clays  competition.  Driving through the grounds, meeting Robert Young (general manager), eyeing all those lakes and ponds, we knew we'd be back someday soon to fish and hunt.  July 4th weekend turned out to be the perfect opportunity to see what the place had to offer in the way of fishing.

We set up the day and time.  Sunday, early, before the heat of the day.  Next stop, Academy for scum frogs in every color, hooks, and fresh line.  Ummm, just a hint.  When in the store, don't crack open the cap to see what bass bait smells like!

Robert was ready and waiting for our arrival.  We headed out to the first of many lakes.  Each lake was more beautiful than the next.  No matter which way I looked, I saw vistas that belonged on a postcard.

Robert was there and then not really there.  You know how it is when someone is always around when you need help,  but never interferes?  That's Robert.  A perfect guide, full of knowledge and great stories.

A number of small fish were caught.

According to Robert, the fish weren't biting that day.  With the "catch and release" program, there are plenty of trophy sized fish in the lakes. Something about the heat and lack of rainfall was keeping them from biting that day.

But, don't tell that to my youngest son, Reed.
He caught a 5 pounder!
